April 14 Social Meeting features Sarah Wilson

Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises … oh my!!
It’s a special moment when we encounter a whale, dolphin or porpoise as we are out paddling.  These are truly majestic creatures.

Sarah Wilson, Outreach & Technical Support Coordinator, Marine Mammal Research for Ocean Wise will be giving a talk covering some basic cetacean biology, identification and best practices for encounters in the wild.  Enrich your experience and learn how to be sure that our
interactions are not stressing or endangering the animal.

Ocean Wise is a Vancouver-based globally focused conservation organization on a mission to protect and restore the world’s oceans.

7:00pm April 14 via Zoom. Members will be send the invitation by email.

February Special General Meeting and Social Meeting

This Special General Meeting is for a vote by members on changes to the Association’s By-Laws. Notice and proposed By-Laws will be sent to members by email at least 2 weeks before the meeting.

The social meeting, which follows the Special General Meeting, features a presentation about paddling on the Central Coast of BC.

John Bakker will be giving a presentation on paddling Chatham Sound, on BC’s North Coast.

John has made several trips exploring the area, including Porcher Island and the Dundas Islands.

December meeting features presentation on Antarctica and South Georgia

PIKA’s social meeting on December 2 at 7:00pm, will be through Zoom.

Special guest, Jean-Francois (JF) Marleau of SKILS, will present on paddling in Antarctica and Southern Georgia.

JF says “words are not strong enough to describe”. Antarctica has whales, elephant seals, penguins. Also calving glaciers, avalanches, glaciers turning… he says the amount of noise from the ice is crazy. South Georgia he described as “the highest concentration of wildlife in the world”. His presentation will be a combination of videos and still photos.

October Meeting Update

PIKA’s October 2020 meeting will be held as a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, October 14, our regular club meeting night.

Note start time change to 7:00 pm.

PIKA AGM March 11

The Annual General Meeting and executive elections will be held on March 11, 2020.

Elections are followed by a regular general meeting and gear swap and sale.

Do you have spare gear to sell? Bring your gently used kayaking or camping gear to our semi-annual gear swap and sale, and if you’re looking for gear, bring your wallet!

Items are always at a great price and in great condition – so if you’re just starting out and need kayak or camping gear, or if you’ve been kayaking for a while and have worn out some of your gear, this is the place to be!
